Additionally, you'll learn how to identify reliable sources for classifying hydrophytic plants and the challenges that may arise during classification. By the end, you’ll be equipped to complete the hydrophytic vegetation section of the Wetland Determination Form, using vegetation effectively to help identify the presence or absence of wetlands.

- This training will go over tree identification tips, basic terminology for tree identification and how to identify the 17 tree species commonly found in Pennsylvania’s wetlands.
This training will go over basic woody vine, sapling and shrub identification tips, basic terminology and how to identify the 20 species commonly found in Pennsylvania’s wetlands.
- This introductory training provides a foundational understanding of the herbaceous stratum and its unique characteristics. You will learn how to distinguish herbaceous plants from other ecological strata, recognize the three primary categories of herbaceous species, and acquire practical tips and tricks to enhance your identification skills in the field.
- Participants will explore the diverse categories of non-flowering plants and gain proficiency in specialized botanical terminology. With a focused look at the local environment, the training establishes a strong foundation for recognizing common non-flowering herbaceous species specifically found within Pennsylvania’s unique wetland habitats.
- This training module focuses on Graminoids, providing learners with the essential skills to recognize and distinguish between four common families. By examining images of key species, participants will gain a clear understanding of the visual differences that define each group. Furthermore, the session highlights the specific plant parts critical for accurate identification, ensuring a practical foundation for field observation.
- This training provides a comprehensive introduction to forbs, specifically focusing on those prevalent in Pennsylvania wetlands. Participants will define what a forb is and learn to identify eight key families alongside eight other common genera found throughout the region. By examining detailed images of representative species, learners will gain the skills to distinguish visual differences between families, ultimately expanding their proficiency in recognizing and appreciating the diverse plant life within wetland ecosystems.
- This training provides a technical overview of wetland vegetation identification and documentation procedures according to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) standards. Participants will utilize 360-degree imagery and corresponding instructional slides to identify vegetation within each stratum and accurately record observations in the appropriate sections of the USACE Wetland Determination Data Form. The curriculum emphasizes the completion of the four-strata vegetation assessment and the subsequent application of the dominance test to determine regulatory compliance.
