This course covers Chapter 4 of the E&S Manual. It discusses perimeter controls, including BMPs such as filter socks and silt fence. We recommend having the manual nearby as you take this course.
This is an introduction to channels, which are found in Chapter 6 of the E&S Manual. It is recommended to have Chapter 6 of the manual nearby as you complete this course.
Completion of this course is worth 1.5 PDH credit hours

This training closely follows Chapter 6 of the Erosion & Sediment Pollution Control Program Manual. Specifically, this course will discuss:

  • The basics of open channel hydraulics
  • Guidelines for channel design
  • Items which should be submitted with the E&S plan
  • What DEP and conservation district staff need to look for when reviewing proposed channel designs

It is recommended to complete the course E&S Manual Chapter 6 Part I: Introduction to Channels before beginning this training.


By the end of this course, the learner should be able to list the parts of a sediment basin, understand what to look for during the construction of sediment basins, describe necessary maintenance requirements for basins, interpret and describe how to correct failures in basins and explain how to remove or convert basins after construction. This course follows Chapter 9 of the E&S Manual in relation to riprap apron design. Specifically, this course will discuss:

  • Calculating the flow and velocity of outlet pipes
  • Determining tailwater conditions of an outlet pipe
  • Sizing riprap aprons based upon outlet conditions
  • How to verify if the selected size of riprap is adequate for an outlet

This course covers Chapter 10 of the E&S Manual. It discusses low hazard individual lots and when an E&S plan is required for one. It is recommend to have the manual nearby as you take this course.
